2008 Miraflores Open Pairs
The last of the provincial open competitions, the Miraflores Open Mixed Pairs, was held at Almeria on the 8th and 9th December. This was so well supported by all local bowling clubs that the normal twenty-four teams was extended to thirty-two to accommodate everyone wishing to take part. The format is that all mixed pairs play over the two days, six games and each game played over a timed hour, hopefully trying to get in the maximum ten ends.
Unfortunately the first day, especially in the morning was very wet and cold. Remarkably this didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of most players. Some expected winners didn’t and others not having a lot of hope did win. This competition is made for those players who settle straight away, slow starters find difficulty.
At the end of Monday the three teams in the frame were on level points were Ken and Viv Sykes, John and Ruth Compton, third were Joe and Norma Pemberton.
Tuesday weather was much better with lots of sun and all players in a great frame of mind. The final three were very close with all three teams from Almeria. Third place was husband and wives Joe and Norma Pemberton, second Ken and Viv Sykes with Jim Pike and his playing partner Sandra Bain taking the winners position.
Thanks go to Joe Pemberton and our Captain Jim Pike for the organisation and running of the competition.
It was a pleasure on completion of the competition during the presentation of cash prizes for the first three how many players commented on how much they enjoyed their two days. We look forward to all meeting up again next year.
